Glutathione injections for skin lightening: what the evidence supports
IV glutathione should not be presented as a reliable or risk-free way to lighten skin or treat melasma. Evidence for oral or topical preparations cannot establish the benefits or safety of an injection.
Separate the routes of administration
A systematic review published in 2025 found limited and variable studies across topical, oral and IV routes. Only one placebo-controlled IV study was identified. The authors advised against IV use for skin lightening because of insufficient efficacy and adverse effects. Findings for one route should not be promoted as support for another.
Changes in a study’s pigment index are also not a guarantee of a lasting or meaningful result for an individual. This evidence does not justify claims that everyone with melasma benefits from adding glutathione.
Product and injection risks are separate concerns
In an August 2026 safety communication, the US FDA described serious adverse events associated with compounded IV glutathione made from a dietary-supplement-grade ingredient. The notice concerns particular reported products and compounding risks; it does not establish the safety of other IV preparations or describe a SkinWise product.
The fact that glutathione exists naturally in the body does not make an injected preparation safe. Do not self-inject or use an online infusion protocol.
Start with the pigment diagnosis
If the concern is melasma, dark marks after acne or a changing lesion, it needs appropriate assessment. The international melasma consensus supports photoprotection and supervised medical treatment, with selected procedures where justified. It does not make a skin-lightening drip a routine treatment requirement.
Ask what condition is being treated, which outcome matters and what evidence supports the actual proposed intervention. Consider the burden, adverse effects and uncertainty before paying for a course.
A practical next step
Bring prior treatments and product labels to a pigmentation consultation. The melasma guide and sunscreen article explain established parts of care and their limits. This article is educational and does not advertise an IV-glutathione service at SkinWise.
