Skin tags

Updated · SkinWise Clinic

Skin tags are usually benign soft growths that often occur in skin folds. They may catch on clothing or be cosmetically bothersome. Other lesions can resemble them, so uncertainty or change should prompt examination before removal.

Removal is optional for many confirmed skin tags. The decision can depend on irritation, location and personal preference.

A tag does not by itself diagnose diabetes or PCOS. Associated health concerns should be assessed on their own merits.

How skin tags appear

  • Soft projections from the skin
  • Growths in folds such as the neck or underarms
  • Irritation when caught or rubbed

Why skin tags form

  • Individual tendency
  • Friction and fold-related factors
  • Associations with some metabolic or hormonal states do not establish a diagnosis

When to see a dermatologist

Seek examination if a growth changes, bleeds without explanation, hurts or is difficult to identify. Do not cut or tie it off yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Will every tag leave no mark?

No. A scar or colour change can occur and depends on method, site and healing.

Does a tag mean I have PCOS?

No. Skin tags alone do not establish a hormonal diagnosis.

Can I use a wart remover?

Do not use a wart-removal product on an uncertain growth or presumed tag without appropriate advice.
