Vitiligo
Updated · SkinWise Clinic
Vitiligo causes loss of skin pigment and can produce pale or white patches. It is not contagious. Activity, body site and individual response influence treatment; stopping spread and restoring colour are different goals, and neither can be guaranteed.
Not every pale patch is vitiligo. Examination helps distinguish other causes before treatment is started.
Discuss new patches, changes over time, previous treatment and the effect on confidence. Camouflage and psychological support can be part of care alongside medical options.
How vitiligo shows up
- Pale or white patches
- Possible whitening of hair within a patch
- New or enlarging areas in active disease
What contributes to vitiligo
- Immune-related loss of pigment cells in common forms
- Genetic susceptibility
- Skin injury may affect some susceptible areas
When to see a dermatologist
Arrange assessment for new pale patches or progression. Mention associated symptoms or a personal or family history of autoimmune disease; testing should answer a clinical question.
How vitiligo is treated at SkinWise
